Zohran Mamdani affirms he will make his home in the storied Gracie Mansion
New York City's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the traditional Gracie Mansion, vacating his rent-controlled apartment that sparked debate in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Dating back to 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for the majority of New York City mayors since the post-war period.
However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, did not confirm he would live there promptly after his victory in November.
"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the need to directing my complete efforts on carrying out the platform on affordability the city's residents elected me on," stated Mamdani in his announcement.
A Fond Farewell
His home was in the Astoria neighbourhood, an area known for its abundance of cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.
"To the people of Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," Mamdani's statement said.
"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, the community will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.
Political Debate
In his race for mayor, Mamdani tied his core platform – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.
Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for occupying the apartment even though he came from a well-known family.
Not All Mayors Stayed
Not every mayor have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on the Upper East Side for his time in office, which concluded in 2012.
In his view, Bloomberg said he believed it ought to be a space for official events, and pushed for an extensive renovation of the historic mansion.
A Vastly Different Setting
As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in a setting a stark contrast to his previous Astoria home.
Featuring cream-colored walls, green shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is a picturesque home overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's historical period.
The estate, which allegedly has several bedrooms, also includes enhanced security to safeguard the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closed by themselves, and the floors emitted odd sounds.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what anyone says," he insisted in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."
The Value of Rent Stabilization
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much landlords can increase rent each year.
Tenants view rent-stabilized housing as essential protections as the cost of housing exceeds the average income.
Records showed Mamdani paid about $2,300 each month for his apartment.
Based on data from the property website Zillow, the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
