Tuchel Wants Jude Bellingham's Aggression So Long As The Three Lions' Star Leaves Egotism Outside.

A single omission proved sufficient. A second one and it could have seemed vindictive from the England manager, who is far too wily not to know that securing World Cup glory will likely need help from Jude Bellingham, even if it is also up to the player to fit into the strategic frameworks and squad hierarchies required with the national team now that he is back in the manager's supportive environment.

Tuchel seeks Bellingham's edge, his intensity, but it is about channeling it appropriately. Skill matters but the squad have learned the hard way that there is a cost when stardom prevails. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.

The midfielder had plenty to reflect on after being left out of the recent team selection. He watched England qualify at next summer’s World Cup without him. He watched the young talent perform brilliantly as a counterpressing No 10. He heard the coach talk about loving the team's dynamism and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club versus Barcelona and the Italian side. Inclusion was a must; a second snub would have put his tournament chances in serious doubt.

The hope is that Tuchel will have a midfielder concentrating on frightening rivals rather than his own colleagues. After all, in purely sporting terms, there is no value to creating tension with a top talent in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has shown him that representing the national team is a precious, uncertain thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now throw a protective shield around the youngster after demonstrating that he is unafraid to drop big names.

“No issue exists with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham possesses that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone must support him and build an environment where he can channel this edge against rivals and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”

Bellingham dominated most of the attention at the team news conference for the upcoming dead-rubber qualifiers against one opponent and Albania. Who else? Well, what about another talent? Here is a further gifted playmaker who needs support and direction. He has not played for the national team since spring and has found it hard to perform well this year but Tuchel had to consider the player after his display in his club's victory versus the German side this week.

The question, however, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a strong case to include another youngster once he is fit after a fitness issue. Would taking multiple creators to the World Cup be an overkill? Gareth Southgate failed to discover the correct balance at Euro 2024. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the team, cramping Harry Kane’s influence in the process.

It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the offensive structure. Space exists for one No 10, with quick attackers on the flanks. Clarity helps. He is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, called up for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the recalled Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a defensive midfielder. Additionally, there is no wide role for the City star, who has to be central. Tuchel prefers him close to Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Phil: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists in your preferred role, could you fill in at the left side? Or the right wing?” he said. “He will play in the advanced midfield role, through the center. I have this fantasy regarding him for a long time. In my view it matches his abilities best.”

He agreed there are times when Foden has not looked himself in an national jersey. “You feel almost like, ‘Does he really enjoy it? And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy for the game, then clearly an issue exists, whether it's his role, the environment, it's unclear.

“I think he is also accustomed to representing Man City in a certain structure, with a clear task. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defensive duties?”

Tuchel discussed one star making runs for easy finishes and the other drilling in goals from 18 yards. He added he has a extended list of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, the goalkeeper and Ruben Loftus-Cheek have dropped out. Nico O’Reilly is rewarded for his excellent performances for Manchester City at left-back. Interest is high.

The omission of Ollie Watkins means there is no direct replacement for the captain in the selection. Interestingly, he hinted at deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Anthony Gordon, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and Jarrod Bowen are other options if he be unavailable. With qualification secured, this is an opportunity for trying new things.

Meanwhile, it is also a chance to get Kane’s relationship with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that one must look back to the latter setting up the captain to net in an international match versus Scotland in over a year ago to find the one and only time in many appearances for England when the duo combined for a score. The coach will know that Kane and Bellingham only exchanged the ball a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and another at the Euros. Their partnership is missing.

“At this point eventually it falls to the responsibility of the individuals,” Tuchel stated. He does not shy away to deliver home truths. There is still a feeling of Bellingham being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against Serbia and Albania. Tuchel wants him committed but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave self-importance outside. Doing so could turn a powerful England team into an more effective one.
