A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block visible behind helped us locate the footage.

Our team is checking video footage and photographs shared earlier today that show the scene of a alleged car bomb explosion that authorities in Russia say killed a senior soldier in Moscow.

Officials in Russia stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that detonated and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is under way.

The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on posts saying the explosion happened on Yasenevaya Street in the southern district of the Russian capital.

We used panoramic mapping services on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to match the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex seen in the footage.

Identifying other structures, streetlights and the street layout confirmed where the footage were taken.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
