The English golfer Clinches the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Showdown Against Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional nerve to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a dramatic playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of play.

Rai nailed a decisive birdie putt from around eight foot to seal the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was likewise a play-off win over the same opponent.

Final Round Drama

The champion started the last day with a one-shot lead over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a total score of 263 after a up-and-down, 67 final round that included seven birdie putts and a pair of bogeys.

The challenger moved one shot clear with the 16th and 17th remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but his rival tied it up again on the 17th and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie attempt to win outright on the last green.

Play-Off Decider

This led to a playoff at Yas Links where Rai triumphed to take the title and $1.5 million (£1.13 million) in winnings.

{“Tommy is a phenomenal golfer and an even more individual. To compete alongside him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated Rai, the current 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and maintaining focus, it’s hard to put into words at the present how it feels. It is incredible to be holding the trophy.”

Notable Performances

The Northern Irish star left himself just too much to do, finishing a stroke short in a tie for third with the Dane, after a stunning 62 final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever score on the DP World Tour, including eight birdie putts and one eagle.

Højgaard carded six birdies of his own, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a dropped shot on the 12th. England’s Richard Mansell hit an excellent final-round seven-under to finish in a tie for fifth place with Australia’s Hillier.
