McKenna's Stance on Celtic

The Ipswich boss referred to Celtic as "an enormous soccer institution" but stressed he is "in the middle" of a "long-term project" with the Championship side.

The mid-thirties took charge of Portman Road in recent years and guided the team to the English top flight with back-to-back promotions, but they managed only a handful of victories last season as they were demoted back to the second division and they presently occupy twelfth place in England's second tier.

"I have not had any of those conversations," the London-born ex- Irish youth international said when questioned about being on the candidate list.

"This isn't a matter I have given any thought to, or where any portion of my focus is this week.

"I have a unique job here at a special club. And we're at a crucial phase of the campaign. Everything external hasn't touched my radar."

Context and Agreement Aspects

It has been suggested that McKenna would be willing to talk to Celtic given his childhood support.

"During youth, we all have our preferences," he said when questioned about those. "I don't think all people has to publicly and declare what they were, but naturally it's a massive sports organization."

The coach signed a fresh multi-year deal in 2024 and was questioned about his reported £5m release clause.

"Throughout coaching agreements, there are provisions," he replied. "I'm unaware what mine are and, were I informed, I wouldn't disclose you anyway!

"I approach this job like I will remain Ipswich manager indefinitely. I know that's not always going to be the situation, but I'll always give maximum effort as long as I remain in position."

Bellamy's Position

Bellamy played for Celtic on loan from Newcastle United in the mid-2000s, but the ex- Welsh striker is minded to complete the ongoing World Cup campaign, a stance that would practically eliminate the 46-year-old from assuming the Celtic job.

The Welsh squad are currently in third place in their qualifying group behind group toppers Belgium and runners-up Macedonia.

Victories over the minnows and North Macedonia in next month would book their place in the qualification play-offs, but they are all but guaranteed of making those, thanks to a successful European competition campaign, even if they fail to finish as Group J runners-up.

Given his current position, the Wales manager, whose agreement concludes after Euro 2028, would not be available until following the play-offs at the minimum.
