Gas Detonation Costs 3 Police Officers During Eviction Procedure in Northern Italy
Three members of law enforcement lost their lives and more than a dozen people were hurt in an apparently intentional detonation from gas at a country home in northern Italy.
Sequence of Events
The explosion occurred as police and firefighters entered the house in the vicinity of the Verona region to enforce an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.
Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Carabinieri force.
Arrests and Aftermath
One male and one female were taken into custody at the scene and a third person who escaped following the explosion was apprehended soon after. All three have been transported to hospital.
The detonation could be heard some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the scene showed the property reduced to a heap of debris.
“This is a time for grieving,” commented the Interior Minister the Interior Minister, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the three family members in the previous occasions.
Property Situation
The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, stated the residence was facing an court order due to financial obligations accrued by the property owners.
Conflict resolution experts had been assigned to speak to the siblings who had locked themselves into the home. When the police came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials believe a family member caused the blast.
“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Claudio Papagno informed the media.
A propane tank had been activated, and the detonation directly hit our officers,” he added.
Molotov cocktails were also discovered at the site, the Interior Minister stated.
Injuries and Destruction
Those injured by the blast comprised eleven more officers of the Carabinieri as well as three members of the state police and a emergency responder.
As stated by the local prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had lacked electrical service.
The prosecutor thought the explosion had taken place on a floor above the doorway and stated to the press it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Moments before the explosion, he said personnel had “detected a whistling noise, likely the gas canisters being activated”.
Neighbor Statements
“Everyone was aware the circumstances were severe,” neighbors stated to reporters, mentioning that the trio had earlier warned to “cause an explosion” rather than vacate the property.
“The incident exacted a ‘dreadful, extremely sad and dramatic price’.”
Minister of Defence the Defence Minister united with other political leaders in honoring the trio of personnel who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
