Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at OpenAI, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein became public.
He remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the chance to have participated, excited about the prospects of the company, and eagerly await observing their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who previously presided over the Ivy League institution, stated on recently that he would be stepping back from public roles due to his relationship with Epstein.
Email Communications
The newly public emails demonstrated that Summers corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.
In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood the economist's decision to depart.
"We value his significant contributions and the insight he offered to the Board," the organization stated.
Congressional Action
This development arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on Tuesday to pass a bill that would compel the US justice department to disclose its records on Epstein.
The bill will afterward move to the office of the White House for endorsement. He has indicated he intends to sign the bill, after modifying his position on the matter following objections from his followers.

A collection of Epstein-related messages released by the legislative panel recently mentioned numerous high-profile figures in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any illegal behavior by those individuals.
The communications indicated that the professor and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often trying to introduce Summers to notable international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the emails were made available with the public, Summers said he took "total ownership for my ill-advised choice to continue communicating with the financier".
He continued that he wanted "to rebuild faith and mend relationships with the people most important to me".
Previous Positions
Summers served in leadership roles under Democratic administrations; acting as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.
He led Harvard from 2001 to 2006 and is still a faculty member there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles earlier on Monday, he stated he would persist with his teaching commitments.
Further Repercussions
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the policy organization, a left-leaning policy institute in Washington where the professor was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not connected with the organization.
Summers entered the leadership of OpenAI, which creates ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a unsuccessful effort to replace its chief executive OpenAI's head.
