El Kaabi's Spectacular Goal Secures Morocco's Win Against Comoros in Afcon Opener.
The the Moroccan side shook off a jittery beginning to overcome Comoros in the tournament's opening game on the weekend, thanks to Brahim Díaz and substitute Ayoub El Kaabi in the second half.
This constituted a less than dominant performance, though, from the heavily tipped Moroccans, who sit 97 places higher than the small island nation in the world rankings and had to work tirelessly for the points in rainy conditions at the Prince Moulay Abdellah stadium.
Tense Start and Missed Opportunities
Morocco failed to convert an first-half spot-kick and were goalless at half-time even with controlling possession, finally opening the scoring in the 55th minute.
It arrived after Noussair Mazraoui showed great skill to prevent the ball from going out before laying it across for Díaz to sidefoot into the net.
Every opening game is always difficult but we came good in the second period,” commented Morocco coach Walid Regragui.
The Substitute's Piece of Brilliance
Any lingering nerves was subsequently calmed by a piece of sheer individual brilliance from Ayoub El Kaabi. Just 10 minutes following his introduction, the forward connected with a ball into the box with a stunning bicycle kick in the 74th minute, making it two and sealing the result.
Before that, the Moroccan team could have been ahead in the 11th minute when a penalty was given for a challenge on Díaz. Yet, Soufiane Rahimi penalty was saved by Comoros goalkeeper Pandor.
Comoros Defiant Stand and Second-Half Chance
Comoros comfortably held their more illustrious opponents for long periods before the hosts' individual talent in the end made the difference.
Goalkeeper Pandor made a number of further good stops to limit the score as the game wore on, although Comoros did have a chance for an equalizer shortly after the first goal, with Saïd firing straight at keeper Bounou.
Fitness Concern for Hosts
The three points was partially overshadowed by an injury to Morocco's skipper, Romain Saïss, who limped off in the first half in some distress.
This centre-back had just made his comeback to the national side recently after a lengthy absence caused by ankle surgery.
This result continues the team's record-breaking run of consecutive victories to nineteen, surpassing the old best of 15 set by Spain from 2008 and 2009.
