Rob Edwards and O'Neil are two of the initial names under consideration to replace the former manager as head coach of Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The previous coach was dismissed on Sunday after the team's 10-match winless start to the Premier League campaign.
Furthermore both candidates - each of whom have historic associations to the club - are among the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.
The manager is presently at Middlesbrough, which would pose a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
However the ex- Luton Town manager - who made more than 100 of games for the club during his time as a player - is said to be a leading candidate for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys support from the Wolves board as they start the process of appointing a fresh manager.
O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, although he would be a surprising appointment considering he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.
The ex- West Ham player is currently unemployed meaning Wolves would not be required to pay any buyout fee.
