Students endured a "significant cost" to shield the public during the coronavirus crisis, Boris Johnson has stated to the investigation studying the impact on children.

The former prime minister echoed an expression of remorse expressed previously for matters the government erred on, but said he was pleased of what teachers and learning centers accomplished to deal with the "incredibly tough" situation.

Afterwards in Tuesday's testimony, Johnson remarked the lockdown and separation rules "probably did go too far", and that children could have been exempted from them.

While "with luck such an event never happens a second time", he stated in any prospective crisis the closure of learning centers "really must be a step of last resort".
