American flight controllers are more and more seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the government shutdown, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were halted on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

He has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead made a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my controllers concentrating on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy stated.
